What’s the best question you have ever been asked? For a young child perhaps its “how old are you”, the answer always seems to elicit a big smile and a sense of pride when they say I’m 4 (5,6 etc)
As we get older the great questions could include ‘will you marry me’ or ‘how do you fancy a new challenge?’ equally though we might hear ‘what did you do that for?’ or ‘can we talk?’. Sometimes its the word, sometime its the tone, but it seems (particularly as a trainer) we are bombarded with questions on a daily basis!
The best question I was ever asked didn’t change my life as much as it changed the way I looked at the world. Yet it was so simple. The question was:
“What would happen if you didn’t do it?”
That simple question helped me see when I was younger how much the pressure I was under was self created. I was suffering from self imposed stress, not giving myself a break, not realizing that sometimes its ok to say no or simply stop.
As a 50 something with what sometimes seems to be increasing demands on my time, its a great question to help me put those demands in perspective.
So the next time you feel under pressure, go on ask yourself, “what would happen if I didn’t do it?” you might be surprised by the answer!
