Watching the new last night I was shocked that in the space of 5 minutes, two separate news stories highlighted to me how important it is to value others, building confidence in those around us. In a story about mistakes being made in breast screening, a woman in her late 60s/early 70s said as she was talking about not getting her mammogram reminder “we are probably not wanted anymore”. This was followed by a report about the investigation into the mortality rates of people with learning disabilities, a mother was quoted as saying “the lives of people with learning disabilities just aren’t (viewed as) that important”.

Do we want to live in a world where we say its ok for people to feel like this? What can we do to ensure everyone in our world feels confident and positive about their lives?

Building Confidence

There is an ART to building confidence, for yourself, in others and beyond.

Acknowledge – in our busy world there may not feel like there is time to think about anyone other than your nearest and dearest. Look up at times and see who else you are sharing the planet with. Talk to them, find out about their view of the world.

Respect – in a diverse and multicultural world, there will be many different opinions and perspectives. Building confidence is about respecting the rights of everyone. At the same time it is about having the confidence to expect your own rights to be valued too.

Thank – appreciate those around you and the value they bring to our society. It is variety and individualism that encourages creativity and growth. We all have a role to play in the world, and we are all of equal value. As the saying goes it takes a variety of flowers to make a bouquet.
