A key element of one of the 4 pillars of being Limitless for Life, Speaking Out, is about giving feedback to others in a confident and constructive way. Feedback is often quoted as being “the breakfast of champions” so surely it’s something we are all comfortable giving?
Hands up those who would say no? you wont be the only one!
So how does Confidence and Self Belief play a part in our ability to give (and receive) feedback or not. Have you heard yourself or others saying any of the following statements? I don’t like giving feedback because…
It could damage the relationship I have with them
I don’t want to upset them
It could come across as harsh or unfriendly
Who am I to suggest how to “fix” the problem
I am really not sure how to start
Phrases I have heard used so many times. So how do we turn this around and feel positive about what we are doing? Given well, receiving feedback (positive or negative) is a positive experience. As Bill Gates said:
“We all need people who give us feedback. That’s how we improve.”
The importance of Feedback and Reflection
The Johari Window model of personal awareness shows us clearly that we only grow as people if we take time to self reflect and time to gather feedback. We need a mirror to see how others see us, and to stop and think about how we see ourselves. Women often see themselves as nurturers even in the workplace and yet the most powerful tool we have at our disposal to help others develop and grow is one we tend to shy away from !
Looking it from this perspective everyone of us has a responsibility to seek out and offer feedback.
So what can you do? How about taking 3 simple steps:
1. Develop a culture of feedback amongst yourself and those you work with. Actively seek feedback from others, responding to it in a positive and constructive way. Make sure you give others positive and negative feedback on a regular basis.
2. When giving feedback always ask yourself why I am giving this feedback? It should be for the benefit of the recipient, if there is any part of it that is for your own personal gain then take a step back and reconsider what you want to say and why?
3. Believe in the value of giving feedback and help others feel that too. Feedback is a gift and who doesn’t like receiving presents!
