Do you like yourself? A strange question for some people I have no doubt, but an important one! Why …. because I don’t know that many people who would answer “Yes of course!”. From the beautiful teenager who simply cant see how amazing she is to the retired friends who are super critical about their role and place in society, there are people in my life from all backgrounds and at all ages that struggle to believe in their value.

Years ago I picked up a book by Janet Street Porter and there was a page that struck me so much that I photocopied it and stick it on my bathroom wall next to the mirror. It is a page of positive things to say to yourself when you wake up every day, from I am Unique to I am Worth It !. Years later faded and looking slightly battered its still there next to my toothbrush. What struck me wasn’t just the great mantras I could choose from (my favourite is I am Bloody Brilliant, said in a Yorkshire accent for some reason), it was what she wrote afterwards. That to value herself was the single most important thing she had learned in life. Now its something I value too!

Learning to like yourself better

There are so many ways to help build your self esteem and confidence in yourself. Here are a few that work for me.

Face yourself, warts as all ! How often do you look at yourself in the mirror? Take time, smile, laugh, appreciate who is in front of you. Start with 30 seconds and build up to 2 minutes. Appreciate the person who is looking back at you.

Be your own cheerleader by creating your own mantras. What can you say to yourself every morning that will show how much you value and like yourself? Feel free to use one of Janet’s!

Build the love, notice the things you do well. We are all hard wired to notice the negatives, the things that go wrong, its part of our survival instinct. So consciously look for the things that go right too. At the end of each day list at least 3 things that you did that you are proud of, big or little.

And remember, you are who you are. Some say its never too late to change but also its never to soon to say “I like myself just the way I am !”.
