100 years from when (some) women in the UK got the vote, and in the week of International Womens Day it seems only appropriate to think about the importance of role models. A role model is someone who inspires you and exhibits the behaviours, values and abilities you admire. If you are looking to build your confidence, a role model can show you what your confident future can look like with a little work.
When I thought about who was my role model, the first thing I realised is that there isnt just one person to focus on. I have more of a composite picture of different women (and men) in my life who have made an impact. My amazing sister who died too soon but still managed to make a great impact on the world. She had such amazing passion and drive. A volunteer I work with at the Cancer Support Centre who is the same age as my mother and has endless energy and curiosity. A friend of mine who had premature triplets who strives everyday to create the best life for herself and her family. And that’s just for a start!
A role model can be a wonderful inspiration in life, as long as we take a warts and all approach to our admiration. Role models may make it look easy but it is important to realize that no one is perfect. Without the ability to stand in the shoes of these amazing individuals we may not fully comprehend the choices and sacrifices they may have taken to do what they do.
Finding your role model
So perhaps this week it is time to create your composite role model, to notice what you really value in others. Ask yourself:
Who in your family, past or present, made a positive impact on your life?
You chose your friends for a reason – what is it about them you admire?
Who would you like to meet in your life right now – what makes them your choice?
Who inspired you as a child, does that still hold true now?
And then consider something else too. That you may be a role model for others, whether you intend to or not. All the more reason to build your confidence and be the best you can be. With inspiration from those around you I am sure it will be amazing.
